Karpenter beyond the basics
If you’re starting out with Karpenter and need a guide to getting beyond the quickstart, or if you’re a more advanced Karpenter user and want to learn some advance skills, this workshop is for you! We will conclude with an introduction to Platform9's Elastic Machine Pool and how it complements Karpenter to further optimize EKS resource usage.
There is no cost to participate in the lab. The entire session will be conducted via Zoom. We will send you instructions on how to join Zoom once you register.
What's Provided
- Platform9 will provide the AWS setup and hardware for the lab. AWS credentials and pre-created EKS clusters will be provided to you at the start of the lab.
What You'll Need Pre-configured:
- Your network must allow outbound SSH connectivity.
- You will need following utilities installed on your local machine: AWS CLI, kubectl, helm, and jq.
- Must be able to connect to the AWS API and other public endpoints hosted in the us-east-* and/or us-west-* AWS regions.
- Basic knowledge of the AWS CLI (including configuring credentials) and kubectl.
Lab activities:
In this 2 hours hands-on session, our instructors will walk you through:- Observing how Karpenter’s behavior differs from the standard Cluster Autoscaler.
- How to control or prevent disruption of your workloads due to Karpenter’s consolidation actions.
- What kinds of workloads Karpenter is not well-suited to handling because of sensitivity to disruption.
- And more!: Multi-architecture clusters, scheduling constraints
- Introduction to Elastic Machine Pool by Platform9 and how EMP can co-operate with Karpenter and improve utilization even further.
Instructors:
Andy has worked with cloud-native technologies for the last eight years, helping organizations adopt and manage Kubernetes. He is the creator and primary developer of Goldilocks—an open-source tool that helps companies leverage the Vertical Pod Autoscaler in Kubernetes. Andy is also a co-chair of the Kubernetes Policy Working Group and a CNCF Ambassador. At Fairwinds, he ensures enterprise organizations are maximizing their investment in Kubernetes through services and software.
Chris is an accomplished IT practitioner with over 20 years of experience in enterprise and cloud infrastructure. As a seasoned product manager and sales engineer, Chris specializes in guiding customers toward modernization through cloud-native strategies and FinOps solutions.
